Slaine describe themselves as "Swiss Kick Ass Death Metal." They also claim that "Slaine is not simply Death Metal and Slaine is not a conventional band." Sadly, the truth is that they are fairly conventional.
This is a good demo, but does not make Slaine sound any more original than any other death metal band out there (he said, gesticulating wildly). I have to give them credit for the excellent production and the professional-looking packaging. The bio and info that they sent is good but poorly translated (what a shocker!). I was surprised that they do not put the names of the band members anywhere on the CD or the bio. I had to go to the website to find their names. No big deal. Fortunately, the website is actually pretty good, but I did not bother to bookmark it.
All in all, I would say this is a very professional and together band. Now all they have to do is write some killer material. Slaine's music just strikes me as typical... and conventional. Sometimes it is hard to articulate what element is missing. They have musicianship. They play well at fast tempos and have some complicated parts that they perform really well. I felt that there were some minor fluctuations in tempo, but they weren't egregious enough to detract from the music. Otherwise, I would say Slaine is a very tight band.
Often, the best part of any demo from a foreign land is what the band writes in their bios. Slaine give a few sentences about each song on the demo. I particularly like their description of the song "Everlasting." "'Everlasting' tells about the emotionally abeyance, the Downfall after a strong negativ emotionally shocker... and about the learning from it. to recognize the own weakeness and finally about the self-discovery. in a stronger form than before." I can't make stuff like this up, people!
I am giving Slaine a generous four skulls because I feel that there might be something lurking within this CD that I'm just not picking up on. I will probably never find it (because I will throw this CD in the garbage within moments of finishing this review), but perhaps you, the metalhead thirsting for something new from a neutral land, will uncover the diamond in the rough.
